Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya (BSSRV) hosted a national seminar on the pertinent topic of "Rethinking Ethnicity, Peace and Conflict Resolution in Northeast India.” The two- day seminar was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Department of Sociology of BSSRV, Golaghat, in collaboration with OKD Institute of Social Change and Development (OKDISCD), Guwahati, from 28-08-2024 to 29-08-2024.
The seminar was inaugurated by Prof G. Singaiah, Honourable Vice Chancellor of BSSRV. Dr Partha Pratim Borah, Head in charge of Department of Sociology, introduced the theme of the seminar and welcomed the distinguished gathering. The Keynote speech of the seminar was delivered by noted scholar of the country, Prof. Samir Kumar Das on From Peace to Security of Life: Emerging Solidarities in India’s Northeast. In a lucid and illuminating lecture, Prof Das highlighted the trajectory of peace in Northeast India, elucidated with rich literature and empirical examples and set the tone of the seminar. Director of the OKDISCD, Dr. Saswati Choudhury, graced the seminar as Chief Guest and highlighted the significance of such a seminar in a contemporary socio-historical context. The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks from Dr Debabhuson Borah, coordinator of IQAC, BSSRV.
Along with paper presentations from people from different states of Northeast India and various disciplines, the plenary sessions of the seminar were graced by distinguished scholars from different disciplines of the region. Notable figures like Prof Akhil Ranjan Dutta, Prof Chandan Kr. Sarma, Prof Kedilezo Kikhi, and others brought their extensive knowledge and experience to the table, enriching the seminar with their insights. The intense deliberations and discussions of the technical sessions of the seminar were appreciated by the audience for their scholarly content and promise to rethink a significant theme through a multidisciplinary approach in a nuanced manner. The screening of a Documentary by Dr Sanjib Deka illuminated a significant episode of the Assam movement that needs wider academic attention.
The distinguished audience congratulated the seminar organising committee on an academically successful seminar coordinated by Dr Partha Pratim Borah, Dr Tapan Saikia, and Shofiul Alom Pathan from the Department of Sociology, BSSRV, and Dr Akshay Jyoti Sarma from OKDISCD. The university plans to organise such enlightening academic activities in the future.
